CogDog talks about disappointment and even I got into a little Twitter sparring with Stephen Downes over what is/isn’t. I think we’ll know more and (a) more of us get account and (b) new extensions emerge that live on top of this platform. The piece quoted below starts the conversation that I think we need to continue to have.

Early users reported mixed feelings. But one month after Google Wave was opened to tens of thousands of people, how are people using it now? What use cases are being discovered? Let’s start with the education sector. We’ll explore other use cases in upcoming posts.

I just recently traded my small SUV in for a very nice used VW Passat Wagon TDI. I did it for lots of reasons, but the primary one was mileage. I wanted something that was more economical to drive than my old vehicle, but I also wanted it to be fun and functional. The Passat is all that.

The picture is obviously showing some serious milage and no, it doesn’t look like that all the time. You can however find the exact spot to make it go from reporting the typical 28 mpg I seem to be getting in town to up into the 100s — its fun to see even it is meaningless. I’ve not had it long enough to get through a whole tank of gas, but half way home and it is looking like it is going to be about double what I used get on a tank in my old vehicle around town. No idea on the highway, but I do very little of that kind of driving. Did I mention it is fun to drive?

Some of the results from the TLT Summer Faculty Fellows are starting to flow out. I can’t even tell you how much great stuff came to life working with Stuart Selber, Chris Long, Carla Zembal-Saul, and Ellysa Stern Cahoy! Just an awesome summer.

I’ll pull a real post about it together in the coming days (or weeks). For now, a pointer to an article from the TLT site on Cahoy’s work written by our own Mary Janzen (who is a killer blogger in her own right). So much of what these four investigated with us this Summer will form the basis fo much of our work the next couple of years.

Cahoy calls the combination of literacy skills she has been investigating “digital literacy.” Digital literacy is “a merging of several literacies, including information literacy, technology literacy, media literacy, and visual literacy,” she explains, “and also incorporates new skills that students will need to succeed when they graduate and enter the workplace. This includes content creation skills like podcasting, video creation, and blogging. Digital literacies help students learn how to use information ethically to create new works that are collaborative, socially driven, and contain a powerful message.”
